We are proud to profile and share with you the tremendous efforts of Vice President Kamala Harris, Ms. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, President Tsai Ing-Wen and Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg.


Kamala M. Harris, Vice President of the United States of America

Kamala Harris is the 49th vice president of the United States. She is the first Indian American and Black woman to hold that position. Vice President Harris was born in Oakland, California to an Indian mother and a Jamaican father. 

At Howard University, Vice President Harries majored in History and went on to earn a law degree in 1989 from the University of California, Hastings College of Law.  In 1990, Vice President Harris worked as a Deputy District Attorney in Oakland. There, she dealt with cases of gang violence, drug trafficking and sexual abuse. She moved on to serve as a managing attorney in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and was later made the chief of the Division on Children and Families for San Francisco’s City Attorney’s Office. In 2010, Vice Present Kamala Harris was elected Attorney General of California, becoming the first woman and African American to hold the position. 

Vice President Harris was sworn into the United States Senate in 2017. With this role, she became the first Indian American and second Black woman to serve in the Senate. She served on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Senate Judiciary Committee and Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. 

Ms. Kamala Harris was elected as Vice President of the United States in November 2020 and sworn in on January 20, 2021.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General, World Trade Organization

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is a Nigerian-American economist. Ms. Okonjo-Iweala  is currently the seventh Director General of the World Trade Organization and is the first woman and first African to hold this position. 

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was born on June 13, 1954 in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, Nigeria. She went to the oldest girls’ secondary school in Nigeria. In 1973, Ms. Okonjo-Iweala  attended Harvard University where she earned an A.B. degree in Economics and proceeded to earn a Ph.D in Regional Economics and Development from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ms. Okonjo-Iweala served at the World Bank from 1982 to 2003 as a Development Economist, Vice President and Corporate Secretary. She served at the World Bank again from 2007 to 2011 as the Managing Director of Operations. Ms. Okonjo-Iweala was appointed the first woman Finance Minister of Nigeria from 2003 to 2006. She served this role again from 2011 to 2015. Ms. Okonjo-Iweala is known for her fight for reforms to reduce corruption and increase fiscal transparency in government. 

In 2020, MS. Okonjo-Iweala was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria for the World Trade Organization’s director general position. Ms. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was elected as the World Trade Organization’s Director General in February, 2021 following support from President Joe Biden.

Tsai Ing-Wen, President of Taiwan 

Her Excellency Tsai Ing-Wen is the first female and first unmarried president of Taiwan, a point emphasized in the press of her country. Tsai Ing-Wen was born in Taipei City in 1956 to parents who owned and operated an auto repair shop. Although she spent her childhood in coastal southern Taiwan, Tsai Ing-Wen later moved to Taipei to further her education. 

Dr. Ing-Wen graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from National Taiwan University in 1978 and obtained a Masters of Law degree from Cornell University Law School in 1980. Dr. Tsai Ing-Wen went on to receive a Ph.D. in Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1984. Following her Ph.D, Her Excellency Tsa Ing-Wen returned to Taiwan and served as an associate professor and a professor in the Department of Law at National Chengchi University. She then served as a professor at Soochow University School of Law and in the Department of International Business at National Chengchi University. 

In 1990, Tsai was appointed as a trade-policy adviser. Her work there was influential in helping Taiwan to join the World Trade Organization. In 2000, then President Chen Shui-bian appointed Ms. Ing-Wen as chair of the Mainland Affairs Council. Her Excellency Tsai Ing-Wen joined the Democratic Progressive Party in 2004. She was soon appointed as Vice Premier in 2006 and elected Chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Party from 2008 to 2012, making her the first woman to chair a major Taiwanese political party. She assumed the role of chairperson again from 2014 to 2016. 

Dr. Ing-Wen represented the Democratic Progressive Party in 2012 and again in 2016 where she was elected as Taiwan’s 14th president. She is the first woman to hold that position and the first person from one of Taiwan’s minority ethnic group to do so.

Raja Easa Al Gurg, Managing Director, Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group

Raja Easa Al Gurg is the Managing Director and Vice Chairperson of Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group. Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg also works to improve female entrepreneurship through her position as President of the Dubai Business Women Council. In addition to this, Dr. Al Gurg is a board member of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and HSBC Bank Middle East, making her the first Emirati woman to be appointed as such.

Raja Easa Al Gurg was born on November 5, 1955. Al Gurg’s father worked at the British Bank of the Middle East and later founded Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group. She graduated with a degree in English Literature from Kuwait University in 1977. In 1978, she served as headmistress of Zabeel Secondary School for Girls before joining the Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group in 1989. 

Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group comprises about 27 companies and 370 global brands that range from retail to industrial ventures. Raja Easa Al Gurg was instrumental in making Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group the largest conglomerate in the UAE to migrate to the SAP HANA system in 2015. In her role as President of the Dubai Business Women Council, Dr. Al Gurg has been instrumental in increasing the number of businesswomen in the UAE from about 10,000 in 2003 to about 23,000, currently.
